Flying ants are the dread of many folk in summer leaving many people to dread the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they expect the summer will bring
Only the unfortunates who have suffered it will know the true nature of flying ants in their houses.
Having an infestation of ordinary wingless ants is bad enough but when they go through their yearly mating phase the position can become horrifying.
Ants often form colonies under the floors and in the wall cavities of our houses and these colonies will survive for many years to come if left untreated and become progressively more annoying each year.
Our dwellings are warm and dry and make the perfect places for a thriving ant colony; even solid hard floor is not a problem to an ant.
Our central heating systems maintains their metabolism even in the depths of winter and my earliest ant treatment was on my birthday, in January!
Ants prefer a sandy soil and there are lots of areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which produce more ant callouts than other areas, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as regular ant properties.
Unfortunately it is during their mating period that they are most annoying. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this often is pretty regularly around the middle to end of July.
Ants mate on the wing and around mid-summer the colony releases flying immature Queens and winged males which in nature would fly off and mate on the wing. Many thousands of these flying ants are released from each and nests tend to synchronise their release so that they mate with ants from other nests.
Often this process starts after a couple of days of hot, dry weather and will usually last for about a week although smaller releases will continue throughout most of the summertime.
Unfortunately when the colony is built under the floor of the house the results can be dreadful, literally thousands of winged ants are released into the lower rooms, aiming for windows as they head for the light.
This can be unbelievably distressing for some people leading to extreme emotional upset to the degree that people learn to loath the summertime and have actually left their homes to escape the plague of ants which they know comes each summer.
The colder summers of recent years has meant that ant call-outs were reduced on the preceding but ants seem to have a way of catching up and 2010 might be a particularly good year for them.
Most people who have this problem opt for DIY solutions with products from DIY stores etc but mostly these efforts fail as they are not getting to the heart of the problem which is the colony itself, tucked safely in the cavity wall or under the floor.
Luckily for most people help.
At Harrier Pest Prevention (subject to site survey) we are able to cure this problem and issue an extendable three year guarantee.
The process which is carried out mainly from the exterior of the house, is totally safe for animals and children and leaves no smell, involves drilling little holes into the cavity walls of the property, not unlike a damp-course injection and blowing an insecticidal powder into the cavity wall under pressure.
This forms an impenetrable barrier across which the ants cannot move and together with a precautionary spray of the inside (if deemed necessary) will gradually bring the problem under control.
The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter are left open so it is an easy matter of topping up the cavity walls every 3 to extend the effectiveness of the guarantee in three year terms.
This treatment is best done out in the early spring however it can be done all year round.
As a very limited time offer in our quiet period we are offering 25 percent off the normalstandard price until May 30 2010. Whilst we usually cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are able to venture further afield but this will be reflected in the cost.
