Gypsy Bellydancing

Gypsy bellydancing is another variation of belly dancing which originated in Turkey. Traditional belly dancing has its roots from Middle Eastern Folkloric dance and believed to have originated from Turkey during the Ottoman Empire. Later, a group of people from other lands like India and Europe combined their own belly dance techniques that later became gypsy bellydancing.

Gypsy belly dancing is a variation of the original belly dance but it includes the basic belly dance techniques and movements. Even the old folkloric steps from Middle East are incorporated into the dance routine. It also shares the same belly dance jargon so same “raks-sharki” moves are familiar. One of the main difference found in gypsy belly dancing is the high energy involved in performing the dance.

The dance r can use middle Eastern music but with live violin music in the background. Guitar music is also used in this type of dance. Seeing a gypsy belly dance performance conjures images of country fairs and carnivals. Music is more lively and upbeat while the dancer is highly-energetic and entertaining.

Another unique feature of gypsy belly dancing is the costume worn for belly dance. The dancer wears gypsy skirt which is different from the traditional belly dance costume of silk pants or long skirt. Gypsy belly dancing skirts are often filled with ruffles which has resemblance to a Spanish flamenco dancer. Belly The skirts are made of heavy fabrics and does not make use of velvet hips scarves with coins. Instead, belts are made of metal or fringe scarves.

Even the top worn known as “choli tops” by gypsy dancers are open in the back and tied by a string. Traditional belly dance requires that choli tops do not expose the dancers back.
