Grapes will grow really well when the temperature is high because sun helps the plant properly ripen. Never plant grapes in the first soil you see. It is highly important to use soil testing kits so that you will not spoil the harvest because of soil related problems. The good ph for grapes soil is around 6.8. Sometimes vineyards will also be productive when the soil has higher PH levels.
We recommend that you always plant new saplings and seeds in Spring as it will be easier to properly treat the soil. Only try to plant those saplings that developed roots. We recommend that you always pour much water in the hole you dug for the sapling and keep on pouring when the soil is being spread as this eliminates possible air pockets near roots. At least 6 feet of space is needed between 2 saplings. Cut-off the roots that are too long or have broken while planting. Grape wines once planted need to be watered only once a week for the first month.
Do not use too much fertilizer with your plants. The harvest can easily be harmed with over fertilization. Analyze the package when you choose nitrogen and make sure that it has the 10-6-4 symbol. Apply it two weeks after planting and once a year during beginning of spring every year before the new growth commences. Each plant needs just 1 pound of fertilizer, don’t over do it. Always avoid the use of herbicides based fertilizers.
The new wines can actually grow randomly at first. However, in the next season you should pick stronger wines. You can easily use one stake of around 6 feet for the purpose.
Keep re-testing the soil every 3-5 years and regularly prune the harvest. Too little pruning can produce low quality grapes and too much pruning can make your harvest grow wildly with very little fruits or no fruits at all. Be very careful while picking grapes too. You can use your taste buds to see if the fruits are ready for harvesting.
