One of the main reasons why belly dancing is popular among women is because of its colorful and interesting outfits that suit the exciting routine of this dance. Belly dancers are amazing to watch as they are clothed in exotic costumes usually made from silk, lycra or satin with adornments made up of sequins, ruffles and other trimmings. Even the jewelry used in belly dancing are unique since these ornaments represent middle eastern cultures which are rich in designs and patterns.

Belly Dance Basics

Belly dance like any other dance style has its own basic techniques. It is not enough just to sway your hips and move your feet since this would look uncoordinated. Belly Dance is a performing art which can be executed gracefully and with the right projection so that one would not be misunderstood as a cabaret dancer. Certain basic movements are part of belly dance that should be mastered to deliver fluid movements that would please the audience and elevate belly dancing into an art form.

Belly Dance is composed of four basic moves that can be considered the core of the dance. A variation can be made depending upon the dancer as one slowly learns the intricacies in this dance. Nevertheless, it is highly suggested to practice regularly the basic moves until consistency in performing the routine is achieved. The Four Basic Moves are:

Basic Staccato Hip Moves

The Basic Stance may seem basic but requires discipline in maintaining a good poise starting from the standing position. The feet should be flat on the ground with body weight distributed so balance is maintained. Toes are pointed forward while the knees are bent slightly which readies the body in a position to shift movement. The staccato hip moves includes hip twist, Hip bump as well as Up and Down Hips.
